Configure User General Settings

Use the General page in the Options window to configure the following General settings for a User:

  • Restore Settings: Reset message prompts and Grids to their default settings.
  • Searching: Automatically open a record if it is the only record returned in a Search.
  • MRU (Most Recently Used) Items: Define the number of items that display in a CSM Item's MRU list (in the CSM Desktop Client menu bar). Ten items display by default.
Note: The number of items that can be viewed in the MRU list at one time includes items that are pinned using CSM Item Managers.
  • IME (Input Method Editor): Use IME capabilities so that Users can enter characters and symbols (ex: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language symbols) not found on the input device (ex: Keyboard).
  • Logging: Configure event logging for the CSM Desktop Client, which records significant events/errors and is used for troubleshooting. When you configure event logging, you define:
    • Where to log events: To the event log (so they can be viewed by the Windows Event Viewer), to a specified file (where you determine location and size), or to a Splunk server (so you can use the tool to manage event data).
    • Which classification of server events to log: Debug, Stats, Info, Warning, Error, or Fatal.

To configure User General settings:

  1. From the menu bar, select Tools>Options.
  2. Click the General page.
  3. Configure Restore settings for messages and Grids:
    1. Restore All Dismissed Message Prompts: Select this check box to restore any previously dismissed message prompts so that they appear again.
    2. Restore All Customized Grids to Admin Defaults: Select this check box to restore all customized Grids back to their default definitions.
  4. Configure Search Results settings:
    1. If Only One Record is Found in a Search, Automatically Go To That Record: Select this check box to be directed straight to the only search result, instead of first viewing the single item in a Grid List.
  5. Configure MRU settings:
    1. Use the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the number of CSM Items that display in the item's MRU list (in the CSM Desktop Client menu bar). Ten items display by default.
  6. Configure IME Compatibility settings:
    1. Use IME Compatible Multi-line Text Controls: Select this check box to allow Input Method Editor (IME) capabilities so that Users can enter characters and symbols (example: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language symbols) not found on the input device (example: Keyboard).
    2. Configure Definition Catalog settings:
      1. Select an option for storing primary system definitions in a local catalog file on a User's machine:
        • Use System Settings: Select this option to adhere to the Administrator definitions of catalog usage.
        • Use a Local Definition Catalog: Select this option to ensure the usage of a catalog, regardless of Administrator definitions.
        • Don't Use a Local Definition Catalog: Select this option to ensure a catalog is not used, regardless of Administrator definitions.
  7. Configure event logging for the CSM Desktop Client:
    1. Configure: Click the Configure button to open the Logging options window.
    2. Select where to log CSM events (select one or more options):
    • Log to event log: Check this box to log CSM events so that they can be viewed by the Windows Event Viewer. Then, select which events to log:
      • Debug and above: Very verbose messages. Leaving this on continuously can get space and resource intensive.
      • Stats and above: Detailed messages that track performance.
      • Info and above: Informational messages that can be used to diagnose a problem with your Server.
      • Warning and above: Warning messages that occurred while the Server was running.
      • Error and above: Errors that were encountered while the Server was running.
      • Fatal only: Errors that were encountered while the Server was running that caused the Server to stop.
    • Log to file: Check this box to write the logs to a specific file and location. Then, set your file limits.
      • Log Level: Select an event classification as described above (example: Debug and above, Info and above, etc.)
      • File Name: Click the Ellipses button Ellipses Button to select a location for the log file.
      • File Size Limit: By default, the file size is set to 10 MB, but can be changed by entering a new value in the field.
      • File Count Limit: Rolling event logs are used, so that when the maximum file size is reached for a log file, a new file is created. By default, the number of files is set to 20 (but can be changed), after which the oldest log file is overwritten by continued logging.
    • Log to Splunk: Check this check box to log CSM events to a Splunk server, where they can be indexed and searched. Then, set your server parameters.
      • Log Level: Select an event classification as described above (example: Debug and above, Info and above, etc.)
      • Server: The name of the Splunk server. If a Splunk server has not already been configured, go to the next step.
      • (Optional) If a Splunk server has not been configured, click Configure.

The Splunk Server Settings window opens.

Define the following, and then click OK:

        • Server URL: Type the URL of the Splunk server (example: https://splunkserver:8089).
        • User Name: Type the user name of the individual with an account on the Splunk server.
        • Password: Type the password of the individual with an account on the Splunk server.
        • Ignore Certificate Errors: Check this box to ignore certificate errors that might be generated by Splunk using self-signed certificates to encrypt data. Tip: Check this box if you trust your connection is with the server.
        • Test: Click this button to test the CSM connection to the Splunk server.
  8. Click OK to close the Logging options window.
  9. Click OK.
