Mobile Barcode Scanning

Use barcode scanning to access important Configuration Item details from your mobile device. For example, using the camera on your mobile device, scan a barcode sticker on a broken computer to identify and open that computer's CI record (from the CSM CMDB). You can then link the Configuration Item record to another record, if needed (ex: Link the Configuration Item record to an Incident on which you are working).

Use a Lookup Action (ex: Lookup Config-Computer (Barcode Scan Action in the OOTB system) to initiate scanning. A Lookup Action launches the mobile device's camera so that you can scan the barcode. Cherwell Mobile then searches the database for the corresponding data (ex: The Config-Computer Lookup Action searches the CSM CMDB for a corresponding CI (barcode info must be in your CMDB) and, if it finds a match, displays the device details).

Good to know:

  • Some configuration is required to make Business Objects barcode aware. In our OOTB system, several Business Objects are configured to be Barcode Aware (ex: Incident and Configuration Item); however, if you have a custom or older database, you must manually configure the Business Object.
  • Successful barcode scanning/interpretation is dependent on the quality of your mobile device's camera, available lighting, the size and print quality of the barcode, etc.
